Information for Health Professionals
Welcome to our dedicated resource hub for medical doctors, allied health professionals, nurses, podiatrists, students and all others seeking to expand their knowledge. You’ll find insights into homeopathy, and benefits for patient care.
Difference Between Naturopathy and Homeopathy

Both naturopathy and homeopathy are holistic practices that utilize botanicals. In Australia, Naturopathy is an umbrella term for a multi-modality practice that includes lifestyle advice such as nutrition, massage, counselling and the use of herbal remedies. In contrast, homeopathy is a standalone system with distinct conceptual and practice frameworks. Unlike Naturopathy, it refrains from using direct forms of herbals. Training approaches also differ significantly.
The foundational concept of homeopathy is to match a bio-remedy’s signature effects to the patient’s signs and symptoms, a principle known as 'like cures like.' These natural substances are further refined through a unique process called 'potentization,' gentle remedies designed to minimize risks—a method often mistaken for simple dilution. The remedy is then administered in the smallest possible dose volume and repeated as necessary to stimulate the body’s regulatory mechanisms and promote health.
Elephant in the Room: Evidence Supporting Homeopathy

Many opinions are grounded in the conclusions of the "NHMRC Information Paper: Evidence on the Effectiveness of Homeopathy for Treating Health Conditions." This report asserts that "there are no health conditions for which there is reliable evidence that homeopathy is effective." However, it is important to note that this conclusion was derived from NHMRC evaluating 176 studies (out of ~1,800 identified), with 5 deemed reliable enough for conclusions due to significant methodological constraints.
It is crucial to clarify that the NHMRC review did not directly evaluate the efficacy of homeopathy; rather, it assessed the quality of existing studies on the subject.
While academic research is fewer and far between in homeopathy, there is nonetheless evidence supporting homeopathy. Know More

Supporting Your Patient with complementary Treatments: What to Communicate

Patients are often delighted to find that their visits to complementary therapists are met with open-mindedness rather than skepticism. This approach empowers them, making them feel more in control of their health.
What you can do to support this:
-
Open dialogue: Initiate a non-judgmental conversation about the patient’s use of alternative remedies.
-
Express specific concerns: Ask about the alternative treatments the patient is using. This helps identify any potential interactions or impacts. Note: Homeopathy is generally considered safe and typically Homeopathy’s safety profile is strong, the remedies designed to minimise risks.
-
Monitor and Assess: Inform the patient that their progress will be regularly monitored and the treatment plan adjusted as needed based on this assessment.
-
Support the patient’s choices and beliefs regarding alternative remedies. Support their autonomy while guiding them with evidence-based medical advice.

Collaboration: What to Expect from Me

Collaborating with complementary medicine practitioners especially homeopathic practitioner not only enhances patient satisfaction, broadens treatment options, improve patient outcomes but also encourages open communication. This reduces the likelihood of patients hiding their use of complementary therapies, leading to safer and more effective care.

Regular updates on the patient's progress
-
Continued adherence to critical prescribed medicines
-
Informed by research and clinical experience
-

Homeopathic remedies generally do not interact with other medications. Therefore, we do not require patients to stop their current treatments. However, with significant improvement we encourage patients to consult their GPs to review and potentially adjust their medications.
